Folk Songs - Paragraph
Folk songs are the most popular form of folk literature. They are composed and tuned by the preliterate people and passed down orally from one generation to another. The life styles of the rural people their hopes, sorrows, expectations and dreams are expressed in these folk songs. Some of the important folk songs are: Jari gaan, sari gaan, nailar song etc. Jari Gaan: Jari gaan is a kind of mourning song sung during Muharram, describing the tragic event of Karabala. Jari is a chorus song. Another kind of mourning song is Marsia. Usually women sing Marisa songs. It is about sufferings of widowed Sakina (wife of Imam Hussain R.A.) whose sufferings symbolize the suffering of all the widowed women. Sari Gaan: Sari gaan is related to boats and boatmen and sung during boat races. During boat race, the boatmen, usually sit in a "Sari" or row while singing to the rhythm of their oar. Instruments like dhak, dhol, jahantor, kanis and ghanta are played. The purpose of these songs is to create merriment and inspiration. Nailar Gaan: Nailar gaan is a kind of prayer song. It asks for blessings from God. The farmers express their desire for rain during ploughing period to have a good harvest.
