Jute is a kind of fibre. It is got from the bark of a tall plant. The jute plant usually grows six to ten feet long. It is called the golden fibre of Bangladesh. Jute is the main cash crop of Bangladesh.
The soil of Bangladesh is suitable for his cultivation. The districts of Mymensingh, Comilla, Noakhali, Faridpur, Dhaka and Pabna are famous for jute cultivation. Bangladesh produces four-fifth percent jute of the whole world.
Jute cultivation is not easy. The land should be ploughed and manured well before planting jute seeds. In the months of Falgoon and Chitra our farmers plough the land for planting jute.
Hot climate, rainfall and fertile land are necessary for the cultivation of jute. The land is to be harrowed again and again. Then the cultivators sow seeds after a good shower of rain. Little plants come out in a few days.
In two of three months jute plants grow up. When the plants get mature, they are cut down. They are bundled up. These bundles are put under water to get rotten, then the fibre is taken out from the stalk and washed in water. After that the fibre is dried is the sun.
Jute is used in many ways. Cloth, gunny bags, ropes, carpets etc. are made of jute. Jute stalks are also used as fuel and fencing.
Bangladesh earns a lot of foreign exchange by exporting jute. The government should protect the interest of the jute growers as its market in the world is now reduced.
